1950s

After researching into the 1950's to inspire my Little Black Dress project,
I have once again fallen in love with the era and keep wondering why I wasn't born then..
There is nothing more eye catchingly beautiful as the
female form being celebrated, emphasising on the narrowness of the waist
thanks to Christian Dior and his first RTW collection, the 'New Look'.
Dior wanted his designs to brake away from the utilitarian work
clothes of the 1940's and create a glamorous romantic notion of femininity, celebrating
'bums and tums'. Along with many features of this era, the curvaceous form is shown
from the use of boned corsets, bustier bodices, hip padding, wasp-waists, waist peplums
and pencil skirts, many of which I have included into my design work.
Because no one can do it better than Dior..

"I think of my work as ephemeral architecture, dedicated to the beauty of the female body."
- Christian Dior.

Givenchy Fall 2011 Couture Collection

Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci never fails to amaze me after studying his
stunning Fall 2011 Couture collection inspired by 'Birds of Paradise'.
All ten gowns were beautifully created with pure white fabrics and were painstakingly embroidered,
some of which featured pearls that had been inserted with crystals to capture the light and create
the effect of an Ostrich skin, creating the most flattering pieces this season.
His collection features the most high quality handwork and extraordinary techniques, such as
hand curled feathers and colour changing degrade beading, contrasting with his famous oversized plastic zips.
If only I could afford every gown in the collection..

Hello Second Year Of College

After many weeks of trying to decide a theme for this project,
from the human body to fairytales, I have decided to research into
the 1950's! (where in my opinion, had the ultimate LBD's).
Having flicked through piles and piles of my Vogue and Elle
magazine collections for inspiration, I have managed to create a sketchbook!

Few pages from my sketchbook

During the first few days back at college, we were given
the module guide for this project, now knowing how much work is expected
from us; haute couture boards, pret-a-porter boards, pionner of the LBD boards,
key trends boards, top 10 black dresses on the high street boards,
theme boards, flat boards, sample boards, 4/5 pages of line-ups, a sketchbook and an evaluation.
On the Monday we quickly flicked through eachothers sketchbooks, having a
look at what everyone had produced over the summer for the project
with alot of work having been done already.
On the Tuesday, we had a discussion on some vintage black dresses dating
from 1890 - 1980, which was very inspiring, especially the 50's dress! We also had a
presentation about black dresses, seeing imagery from a wide time scale.

To do: portfolio boards and more sketchbook work - more atmospheric - link to theme
and add more design work.
